It is time to take modern storytelling through video game mediums seriously. Games continue to push the boundary between AAA gaming titles and Hollywood box office hits. These elaborate, dramatic, and emotional stories tap into the most basic human psychology, our need for compelling shared experiences. Games like The Last of Us, God of War, and Halo are prime examples of video games that bridge the gap between a mere game and a unique story-driven adventure.
With beautifully written stories and ultra-realistic graphics, these games take you through emotional journeys that immerse and engage you in ways that you wouldn’t expect. Creating a special experience that other mediums cannot do.
Whether it’s the moment Master Chief has to leave his AI companion Cortana on an alien ship in deep space with deadly zombie-like alien parasites or Kratos the savage God of War, being a thoughtful husband honoring the wishes of his dead wife and an awkward father attempting to teach and bond with his son on a perilous journey; these games create relatable stories and have a way of getting players emotionally invested in the characters and their journey, no different than your favorite Netflix show or movie.
The difference is with game’s you truly feel as if you are partaking in the journey through the eyes of your character, you’re not passively watching a story play out but are actively engaging and sometimes altering the outcome of the story. The level of detail and complexity within these stories and the underlying lore that sets the foundation for them is a skillful art that deserves attention.
The next powerful storytelling adventure will undoubtedly be CD Projekt Red’s December 10th release of Cyberpunk 2077. After 8 years of production and 3 delays, Cyberpunk will finally be ready to explore. Night City boasts a highly detailed and expansive environment that will immerse you in the criminal underbelly and take you from a lowly street punk with dreams of grandeur to a bloody mercenary involved in a deadly conspiracy.
Cyberpunk will undoubtedly be an emotional roller coaster and we are super excited to get our hands on it. I cannot wait to slice and dice enemies into dozens of little pieces using fully prosthetic arms that transform into giant katanas of death. I will finally be able to check that off my bucket list.
