Coplay Media to Host STEM-Driven Gaming Tournament to Increase Diversity in the Esports Industry
Event to provide STEM training courses, career and educational resources, and internship opportunities for minority youth
(Washington, DC) February 19, 2019—Esports event’s organizer Capitol Underground Gaming League, inclusion-focused business incubator Inclusive Innovation Incubator (In3), and anime media outlet Coplay Media have partnered to host a pilot Ultimate Gamer Tournament to showcase career possibilities and opportunities in the gaming industry to young minorities. In addition to the triathlon-style tournament competition, the event will feature STEM speakers and other league and tournament organizers as well as gaming media outlet personalities.
“There is a dearth of minorities involved in the development of games and throughout the esports industry,” said Capitol Underground’s CEO, Trevor Williams. “The International Game Developers Association’s recent research states that only three percent of game developers are African-American, though seventy-six percent are Caucasian. This disparity is slowly improving; however, obstacles like financial barriers, absence of training, and inability to access opportunities severely restrict ethnic minorities from entering the industry.”
“Our goal is to educate minority youth to the possibilities available to them in gaming and esports and to inspire them to seek out opportunities to follow their passion for the industry into profitable, fulfilling careers in STEM,” states In3 CEO Aaron Saunders.
While traditional esports tournaments emphasize proficiency in one game, the triathlon-style tournament format intensifies competition as it necessitates players be proficient and versatile in multiple games. Registration is reserved for minority youth who participate in the Montgomery County-based B.R.O.T.H.E.R.S. (Brothers Reaching Out to Help Each Reach Success) program, an initiative dedicated to mentoring at-risk minority boys to graduate from high school and to pursue university-level education.
